Water is the carrier. Thus when using an acrylic paint, you will need to use water to wash equipment. Due to EU legislation (see VOC), acrylics are becoming ever popular and better.

They are generally a bit more expensive than their oil based equivalents, however the shorter drying/recoat times and their non-yellowing properties often make them the more economical option in the long term.
